IWR6843ISK: range calculation

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Hi,

I am trying to capture vocal fold vibration with IWR6843ISK+DCA1000.To calculate the range between throat and radar, first I pointed the radar at the wall.

Here is my config of studio and range_resolution is about 4.8cm

Here is experiment scenario. The shortest distance between the radar and the wall is 33.5cm.

According to the range_resolution and distance,I calculate that there should be a high amplitude at range bin7.

  • Was my calculation correct?

I took the Fourier transform of the raw data from DCA1000 and get this ,the energy amplitude at rangebin7 is very low

It looks like the whole image is shifted to the right by a rangebin.

  • Why is this?

  • Hello,

There is a few things that are going on here. First off for the most optimal and precise measurements possible for a radar to detect, a corner reflector is needed which we use for debug and validation purposes. You can create a makeshift one with aluminum foil which will generally be better than a wall. With a distance of 33.5 cm, this will be the absolute minimum distance the sensor will detect. This is because some waves will penetrate through the wall and reflect on the inside, some waves will detect the wall not at boresight but at lower and higher angles. This will have a longer distance due to the Pythagorean theorem. A small diagram below shows more along what I mean.

    Best Regards,
