TDC1000: TDC1000 - How is the temperature sensor input used?

Part Number: TDC1000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR6043, TUSS4470

Just wondering how the temperature sensor input is actually used on the TDC1000.  My understanding is it basically returns the TOF, but TOF is not affected by temperature.  Yes, the speed of sound is affected by temperature which relates to density and flow.   So what compensation is the part actually making?

  • Hello Brent,

Thanks for posting to the sensors forum!

The temperature sensor results are not used for any sort of compensation on the TDC1000. The temperature data can simply be used to factor into your calculations or as feedback to your system in case the temperature measurement is required.

Just note that if you are doing flow measurements the TDC1000 is not the recommended device for ultrasonic flow, the recommended device in this space is the MSP430FR6043.

  • Ahh...  That makes sense.  Thanks.

We are also looking at the MSP430FR6043.  The issue we have is it will not support the commonly available 40 kHz transducers and we are having a hard time finding 200 kHz transducers.  They are out there, but they are much harder to get ahold of.

We like the easy of development on the MSP430FR6043. The tools are great and it seems to act well, but sourcing the transducers is a concern.

  • Hello Brent,

Typically we dont recommend usage of TDC1000 for low frequencies like 40kHz, we only recommend the device to be used at 1MHz or higher, especially in liquids you might be sacrificing a lot of resolution running at 40kHz. I think if you are looking for another AFE to use that has a large range you should look at TUSS4470.

This provides an analog output that you should be able to capture via an ADC. If you like the tools provided by the MSP I believe they have another variant that doesn't have the AFE but provides all the tools to process the data collected from the TUSS4470. The TUSS4470 is capable of working with frequencies 40kHz-1MHz.

    Best,
