AWR2944: Question about strong near target will increase all rangebin&dopplerbin's noise

Part Number: AWR2944

Hi

In AWR2944 ES2.0, we found another strange phenomenon: A near strong detection will increase all range bin & doppler bin's noise. We think this phenomenon is not correct. Would you please help to analyze this phenomenon?

Some config about RF: the RX gain=24; the HPF config: 175KHz&350KHz

Test : We use a target simulator to simulate a far range detection in chamber, and after 1D FFT and 2D FFT with windows, we plot the RD map, and calculated the noise of each range bin, and then we add a corner reflector in near range, and maintain the target simulator, and do the same analyze, so that to analysis the near range target's effect about noise level ,and result are as follows:

       Simulator & corner reflector:

the noise in all range bin is almost same, it's about 27.97dB, and we can see there are two detections in chamber, the near range detection's power is very high. the simulator gain is =-10dB

       Only simulator:

the noise in all range bin is almost same, it's about 25.1dB ,so we can see that noise is reduced 2dB without corner reflector, and all rangebin's noise is reduced, the simulator gain is =-20dB

  • Hi,

We will need to check on this with the team internally. Kindly allow us some time to check on this and get back to you.

    Thanks,

    Pradipta.

  • May I know when you could get the feedback?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Wang,

I'm not able to see any difference between the two here. The noise floor level is factored in by the simulator gain. Apart from that, I'm not seeing any strange behavior. Could you please elaborate here?

    Regards,

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik

Thanks for your reply, I forget upload some pictures and test, we also use the same simulator gain and test again:

           Simulator & corner reflector:

the noise in all range bin is almost same, it's about 27.5055dB, and we can see there are two detections in chamber, the near range detection's power is very high,it;s about 87dB , and the far range detection is 55dB, but the noise is also increased to 27.5dB ,  which has 2.35dB increased. the simulator gain is =-20dB

  • Hi,

    1. Can you please tweak the Rx gain on the device's side by keeping the simulator gain constant and see if there is still some inconsistency?
    2. What is the level of noise in the absence of any object in the scene?

Unfortunately, we do not have a simulator setup on our end as of now and supporting this might not be possible.

    Regards,

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik

1.We test different RX gain:24\32\36, both of them will increase the noise floor

          2. if there are no object, the noise floor is about 22.5dB

           Thanks

           Patrick

  • Hi Kaushik

Is there some new info or new feedback.

    Thanks

    Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

I wanted to also confirm the following:

    1. Are you seeing this increase in noise floor with only a reflector kept at a nearby distance? Does it stay true when it moves away from the radar?
    2. Are you certain that this additional level in noise is not contributed by the simulator's target? This is because the noise seems directly related to the simulator gain. And if this is causing a behavior as such, we will not be able to support the debug further.
    3. Have you performed your experiments in an anechoic chamber to eliminate unwanted sources of noise?
    4. Have you performed your experiments on different devices or the same device?
    5. Is there any way to quickly reproduce this issue (if confirmed) on my end?

    Regards,

    Kaushik
