OPT3101: Looking for the solution that can measure 100m distance

Hi Team,

My customer is looking for the solution that can measure 100m distance.

They already use OPT3101 to measure the length and saw this device can measure max 105m in anther thread.

What kind of LED part should they use to achieve measuring 100m ? Do you have any recommendedLED parts?

Hi Shoo,

I haven't seen this be done before, so I don't currently have any recommendations for LED parts, but reaching this distance would require the emitter and receiver to have very narrow FOVs. The FOV of the system can also be improved with the right optics.

This app note shows results from using the OPT3101EVM to measure a retro-reflective target at 40m distance: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/sbaa303/sbaa303.pdf?ts=1689259501738&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FOPT3101

The EVM uses IR LED and no special optics, so this distance can be extended with proper optics and a VCSEL instead of an LED. Keep in mind that using a VCSEL can introduce eye safety concerns.

I don't have any data for achieving a higher distance than this. The device is able to read out up to 120m with de-aliasing mode, but this far of a distance has not been tested so I am not certain on the feasibility. There would need to be more testing with custom optics and a VCSEL.
