DCA1000EVM: DCA1000EVM disconnects frequently

Part Number: DCA1000EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443, AWR2944EVM

Hello, I have a question that has puzzled me for a long time: DCA often disconnects, and I don’t know the reason for the disconnection, so I want to seek your help here. The specific problem description is: When using mmWave studio, I will first test whether DCA is connected successfully. I used a docking station to connect to USB, as shown in the figure below.

At first, it will connect successfully and store a .bin file, which is normal at this time. After a minute or less than 1 minute, when I measure the data again, DCA has been disconnected, FPGA version can no longer be obtained, and I can only disconnect and reconnect, and then I can only measure once. I feel very puzzled. What could be the cause of this? I tried to use the computer’s own socket without using the docking station, and even failed to connect to DCA. I hope to get your timely reply.

  • Dear Yulong -

Thanks for the post and welcome to E2E!
Can you confirm that you have checked Section 7 on page 21 of DCA1000EVM user manual? https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruij4a/spruij4a.pdf

Would you also please report the current sourcing capacity of your power supply and if any of the LEDs are on and if you have attempted increasing the packet delay?

Here also it is probably recommended you keep using dedicated ethernet port and not a USB to Ethernet converter as well.

  • Hello, thank you for your reply. I tested it again today and the error indicator lights did not light up. I can only collect data continuously. I successfully measured some data (I’m not sure if it is), but once I stop for a while, such as one or two minutes, it will disconnect, but the DCA board will also flash, but there are only two files .txt and .csv, and no .bin file. What should I do? I look forward to your reply.

  • Dear Yulong -

Thank you - here can you try adding +5VDC power supply on the DCA1000EVM and moving SW3 to opposite position?

  • Dear Josh,

Thank you for your reply. Since I only have a 5V DC power supply, I previously connected it to the red part in the picture, which powered both boards (IWR 1443 and DCA100OEVM). Do you mean that I only need to plug in the DC power supply port on the DCA1000EVM board, and the other board does not need to be added? Also, can you help me check the part in the green box in the picture? It looks different from the picture you gave me. My board is IWR1443. Thank you very much for your reply. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

  • Dear Yulong -

The previous image was close up of the DCA1000. (I have it currently connected to AWR2944EVM and use both +12VDC (on AWR) and +5VDC (on DCA1000) power supplies) - I will get an IWR1443 board tomorrow and check it for you.

  • Hello Yulong,

For the green box, please use the switch settings Josh had shared. For the 1443BOOST EVM, you will need two 5V DC supplies, one for the BOOST EVM and one for the DCA1000.

    Hope this helps,

    -E. Shareef

  • Dear E. Shareef,

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry I didn't reply in time due to some matters. I tested this solution at that time and found that it still disconnects frequently. I finally found out the possible reason for the disconnection: as it would happen before that I would finish initializing the parameters and finally found that the DCA1000EVM didn't connect successfully, I habitually clicked on DCA config first, and then after all the initialization was finished. I clicked on reset and connect to reconnect to the DCA, and there would be a case of disconnecting after measuring for a while. Thanks again for your professional reply.
