AWR2944: minimum detectable Rx power

Part Number: AWR2944

Hi TI experts,

I would like to base on the Radar Formula to calculate the max distance, Rmax, so the minimum detectable Rx power of AWR2944 is essential to know. However, I could not find the value in the datasheet of AWR2944. Could you tell me the minimum detectable Rx power?

Thanks,

Sean

  • Hello,

The minimum detectable signal level depends on the SNR that you require. Lowering the SNR will result in longer range. SNR requirement is 18dB but can be changed to 12dB for the best possible range.

    Hope this helps,

    E. Shareef

  • It's useful. Thank you.

  • Hello Ehtesham,

I ran mmWave Demo Visualizer with AWR2944 EVM and got the Range Profile for zero Doppler in the picture below.

    1) Based on the above picture, can I get the SNR from this formula?

    2) I decrease the value of RCS gradually until the object cannot be detected on the X-Y Scatter Plot. Can I say this SNR is the required SNR for this system?

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • Hello Sean,

This is a very good question. I feel like I know the answer but please let me confirm this and get back to you.

    Thanks,

    E. Shareef

  • 1. SNR you have in the picture is correct. SNR = Detected Point (dB) - Noise floor profile (dB)

    2. Lowering RCS to a point where object is no longer detected will give you the minimum required SNR.

Now, it looks like the object they are trying to detect is in the LPF cutoff region. You should adjust their profile so that this object falls within the passband region for better SNR.

  • Hello Ehtesham,

I really appreciate your prompt reply and such useful answers.

Do you mean I can adjust the profile of LPF in order to let the object fall within the pass band and get a better SNR? Is there any document describing how to adjust the profile of LPF?

    Many Thanks.
