IWR1843BOOST: SPI always shows as 'disconnected' in mmwave studio

Part Number: IWR1843BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1843, UNIFLASH

Hello,

I have a problem with connecting IWR1843&DCA1000 and mmwave studio. It still says SPI is disconnected when I have pushed the `SPI connect` button.

below is the log:

[17:44:09] Status: Failed, Error Type: RADAR INTERFACE ERROR
[17:44:14] MSS Power Up async event was not received!

I have checked: S2 switch in SPI mode, SOP[2:0] == 011.

I have tried `format SFLASH` function by using uniflash. But It doesn't work when I turn back to mmwave studio.

Here is entire screenshot:

  • Hello,

Just to confirm, have you checked the guide on the Radar Toolbox for the DCA1000? Please take a look and follow the steps in the exact order shown carefully.

    https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?a=1AslXXD__1.20.00.11&node=A__AGTrhNYW8jE6cMxbovlfaA__radar_toolbox__1AslXXD__1.20.00.11

"MSS Power Up async event was not received" is a somewhat common issue that can happen during the startup procedure. This involves the connection and ability to communicate exclusively between DCA1000 and computer. Make sure you are using a 5V 3A power supply and try changing out the Ethernet cord. You could also try temporarily disabling your firewall as this is another action that has been confirmed to help some people. On the left side of mmWaveStudio will be a button that is used to setup up DCA1000 communication, and you should attempt to get this working and reading FPGA Version (usually 2.8).

  • Hello,

I have tried disabling the firewall, but it doesn't work. But I find something wrong. I can't see the 4 ports begin with '"AR" in Device Manager (also not in `Other device`). Fig.1

    Fig.1

And Settings shows that Network adapter state is disconnected. I am sure I plug in the Ethernet cord correctly. Fig.2

Now I am not sure whether DCA1000 has broken down or not. Can you help me to check the Fig.3 ?

Button used to setup up DCA1000 communication in mmwave studio display as Fig.4

    Thanks.

  • Hello,

Without the four DevPack ports showing up, you are unable to do anything such as reflashing the DCA1000's FPGA. The two COM ports 24 and 25 are the mmWave Sensor. Your Fig 3 is perfectly normal. Can you try removing the SD card if there is one connected? Although this typically does not prevent the DevPacks from showing up. If the FTDI driver does not work, and you have tried on another computer and still do not see the four DevPack ports, and have tried different cables, then there is not anything else you can do. Ethernet will have no change on exclusively the four DevPack ports showing up, only the USB cable connected to the "RADAR_FTDI" slot, but Ethernet not showing a connection is a further sign of an issue. I believe there is a hardware issue here, so please reach out to customer service and feel free to refer to this thread as evidence of a malfunctioning board. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Hello,

I have tried using another computer for the operation, but the status of SPI still shows as 'disconnected' in mmwave studio. I wonder if the absence of the four DevPack ports could be the cause of this issue.

When I click 'SPI connect' button, the following error will pop up immediately:

      * [10:38:25] Status: Failed, Error Type: RADAR INTERFACE ERROR
      * [10:38:29] MSS Power Up async event was not received!

Additionally, there are two `Unknown USB devices` under `the Universal Serial Bus section` in `Device Manager`. (I have already reinstalled the FTDI driver.) I wander if there is any possibility that the issue might be due to improper configuration of my relevant drivers.

    Thanks.

  • Hello,

Are the four DevPack ports absent on both computers? You will not be able to connect to SPI without the ports showing up so you do not need to even get to mmWaveStudio to check. The DevPacks should show up promptly after connected the USB cable to the computer if the FTDI drivers are downloaded and installed properly. The two unknown USB devices, was this on the second computer? This could be the mmWave sensor if you are talking about the second computer, but if you are able to see the two COM ports you showed a few posts back AND have the two unknown USB devices, then I am not sure they are related.

  • Hello,

Yes, neither of them don't display the four DevPack ports. On the second computer, I can see both two COM ports and two unknown USB devices. But their appearance is related to whether the iwr1843‘s cable is connected or not. So, is it confirmed that there is a malfunction with the DCA1000?

  • Hello,

If you cannot get the four DevPack ports to show up, then unfortunately there is not really any more debug steps you can take. FTDI drivers, changing USB cables, ensuring 5V 3A power supply being used. The four ports should show up independently of the mmWave sensor's presence. I imagine nothing shows up under "Unknown Device" either in Device Manager? If so then I can confirm there is an issue with your DCA1000, please reach out to customer service and feel free to refer to this thread as confirmation of your issue. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
