TMAG5231: TMAG5231A2DBZ will it able to operate with the magnet located on opposite side of the sensor (behind the PCB)?

Part Number: TMAG5231
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV5032,

Dear Sir/Madam,

End customer plan to use TMAG5231A2DBZ to replace DRV5032. But they would like to know if TMAG5231A2DBZ  able to operate with the magnet located on opposite side of the sensor as shown below, will it work?

Best Regards, Felix

  • Felix,

    Thanks for reaching out.

TMAG5231 has an omni-polar response, so it will toggle whether a N or S pole is presented. What the device requires is a vertical component that exceeds the operating threshold of the sensor.  What is pictured should have a field vector that is entirely vertical.  It will not matter if the magnet is above or below the sensor. The main consideration here will just be that the field is strong enough to trigger the device.  In the case pictured above, the field vector has a vertical direction from the PCB to the sensor, which is typically considered a positive input for our sensors.

Using TMAG5231A2DBZ, the maximum operating threshold is 2.7 mT, so it is quite likely that the customer should be able to position a magnet close enough to produce this much field.

    Thanks,

    Scott
