Inquiry Regarding Radar for Driver Monitoring Application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWRL6432BOOST, AWR6843, AWR6843ISK, DCA1000EVM, AWR6843AOP, IWR6843ISK-ODS

Hello,

I am currently exploring radar options for a driver monitoring application within a vehicle. The primary objective is to obtain accurate distance measurements for various joints, including the head, shoulders, elbows, legs, and torso.

Your insights and recommendations on suitable radar solutions for this specific use case would be highly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance.

  • Hello,

We don't have any demos specifically for driver monitoring, but we have a few in-cabin examples, such as Child Presence Detection, Intruder Detection, and Life Presence Detection, that you can look at in the Radar Toolbox. in terms of device selection, I would recommend looking into either the IWR6843ODS or AWRL6432BOOST. The AWR6843ODS will support higher range resolution which may be necessary for collecting accurate distance measurements, but the AWRL6432BOOST supports low power mode which can help achieve far lower power consumption.

Hopefully this gives you a good starting point, but I'll try to track down some more resources to send over. If you have any other questions or would like to share any specific requirements (range accuracy, angular accuracy, power requirements, etcs.), then let us know.

    Regards,

    Kristien

  • Hi Kristien,

Thank you so much for the response. I looked for AWR6843 CPD With Classification and this interest me for my work. I assume if I place this radar in front of driver then I can get a good 3D point cloud to extract required information. I want to know if the 3D point cloud is only limited to the visualizer or can get an output file of it to further use it as per my own use case.

Also, there are AWR6843AOP,  AWR6843 and AWR6843ISK available and wanted to know which one will suit best for my student research work. All three of them have the same general specifications and being new to radar I wanted your guidance for this. Further, is DCA1000EVM necessary to capture the data? I understand that if I don't use DCA1000EVM then real time data capturing isn't possible. Then how I shall get data if I use only AWR6843XXX.

I am looking for range resolution of 5cm, azimuth and elevation angle resolution of 10-15 degrees as they will fulfil my research requirement.

Thank you so much for support and guidance.

    Best regards,
    Pushkar

  • Hi, Pushkar:

I would recommend AWR6843ISK-ODS board or AWR6843AOP board because both of their antenna have wide FOV in both azimuth and elevation direction.   And the angle resolution is about the same in both azimuth and elevation direction on these two boards.   In general, ODS board has the  best antenna performance.  So start with AWR6843ISK-ODS board will be a safe starting point.

For real-time data capture, you need to purchase the DCA1000 board.   Otherwise, you need to develop your own application for data capture through other interface like UART or SPI.  You may also need to lower the frame rate significantly.

Regarding 10-15 degree of angle resolution, ODS board with capon beamforming should get you there.

  • Hi Zigang,

Thank you for your response. I couldn't find AWR6843ISK-ODS instead there is IWR6843ISK-ODS/ AWR6843ISK. Could you please help me on that?
I understand the ODS stands for Overhead Detection Sensor and wanted to know if placed in front of driver will work as well?

    Best regards,

    Pushkar Mahajan

  • Hi, there:

You can order IWR6843ISK-ODS.   ODS means obstacle detection sensor, just means the antenna was designed with wide field of view (FOV).

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

Thank you for the clarification. I will look forward to use this sensor for my use case.

Does the radar support data capturing using python API?4

    Best regards,

    Pushkar

  • HI, Pushkar:

Here is the summary of all the data capture tool TI supported.  https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=A__AGkPfsz5meFLRfCUtNeTfQ__radar_toolbox__1AslXXD__LATEST

I do not think any of this tool provide Python API.

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

    Thank you for the information.

So, I wound need IWR6843ISK-ODS with DCA1000EVM to record data and custom algorithm to get point cloud data.

    Best regards,

    Pushkar

  • Yes, that is correct.
