MMWAVE-STUDIO: mmWave Studio DCA1000

Part Number: MMWAVE-STUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843AOPEVM, IWR6843AOP, MMWAVEICBOOST

I was following DCA1000 quick start to install mmWave-studio, 2.0. After I installed mmWave-studio, it can start, however, I didn't see XDS110 class  com ports, so I installed "processors.wiki.ti.com/.../XDS_Emulation_Software_Package" as the quick start states. But after I installed the emulation package, I still don't see the XDS110 class com ports, and mmWave-studio didn't work anymore, it gave the following error messages.

I tried to reinstall the mmWave-Studio, but it stays the same. Could you help to give some guidance?

thanks,

Jason

  • Hi,

What is the radar EVM that you are using with DCA1000?

    Thank you
    Cesar

  • It's IWR6843AOPEVM, I have tried those procedures on two windows11 laptops, and got exactly the same errors.

  • Also, when I start teh mmWave studio, I don't see any tabs like those shown in the quickstart. Below is a screen shot, I think it needs the Matlab runtime engine, but after I install the runtime engine, the error message pops out.

  • I tried another Windows10 machine, and installed the emupack for 64 bit, but didn't get the XDS110 driver as described in the guidance. Is there any specific driver I need to update?

    thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi, Cesar, I'd like to re-flash the IWR6843AOP evm see if it helps. Could you let me know where to download the imaging file?

    thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Sorry about the delay. A couple of things to note here.

    1. I'm not sure if mmWave Studio currently supports windows 11. I will check on this to confirm and let you know.
    2. Please confirm that you have installed the correct MATLAB runtime version. It should be MATLAB Runtime Engine v8.5.1. This specific version is required.
    3. Your ports actually look correct. They are showing up as silicon labs instead of XDS110 because you are using the AOP EVM without the MMWAVEICBOOST board. I'm sorry if there was confusion caused by the documentation.

When you follow the procedure described in the documentation (on the Windows 10 machine) are you getting any errors?

    Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh, thanks for your response, there are a few things I need your help.

    1. I installed mmWave Studio and Matlab runtime machine on Windows10, although there is no error message, but the board still can not connect on the COM port, because the XDS110 ports are not recognized by windows. Is there any driver files of XDS110 that I can try manually?

    2. I was thinking to flash default .bin file to 6843AOP EVM see if the board still works, but I couldn't find anything on ti website, could you let me know if I can download some default or demo bin files just trying to see if the board is still good?

    3. We ordered 6843AOPEVM + DCA1000, they are connected through the SAMTEC cable. Based on the quick start, it seems they should work, but let me know if we need to order anything else.

    Really appreciate your help.

    thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

    No problem!

the XDS110 ports are not recognized

This is expected. The ports will only show up as XDS110 if the MMWAVEICBOOST carrier board is used. Since you are only using the AOP EVM+ DCA1000 then the ports show up as "Silicon Labs." This is fine as the MMWAVEICBOOST board is not required if you have IWR6843AOPEVM Rev. G or later. Therefore you should not need any updated drivers.

When selecting the com port in mmWave Studio, you will want to use the 'Enhanced' com port. This appears to be com10 in your case.

I was thinking to flash default .bin file to 6843AOP EVM see if the board still works

You can refer to this User Guide for instructions on running the Out-of-Box demo with your EVM. The .bin files can be obtained by downloading the Radar Toolbox. Instructions on downloading the Radar Toolbox can be found here

We ordered 6843AOPEVM + DCA1000, they are connected through the SAMTEC cable. Based on the quick start, it seems they should work, but let me know if we need to order anything else.

What revision is your AOP EVM? If it is rev. G or later then you should not need any additional hardware. One important point to note also is that the power supply for the DCA1000 should be 5V 3A. Please confirm this on your end.

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • thanks Josh, for some reason, I still don't connect to the COM port. What's the settings of those switches S1, S2, and S3? Based on the datasheet, looks to me those need to be all off. I tried to set S3 on both on and off, but none of them work. S1, S2 should be all off right?  I see some LED blinks, so I guess the board is fine.

  • Jason,

S1 and S2 should not be all off. There are some switches which must be on. S3 must be off (functional mode). You can refer to this diagram for S1 and S2 settings when using AOP + DCA1000.

Also please make sure you are following the steps in this user guide for raw data capture with the DCA1000. For hardware setup, the section titled AOP Standalone Mode will be relevant in your case.

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • Thanks a lot Josh, by following your guidance, it looks like the 6843AOP works fine, I can make all the RS232 and SPI connections. However, looks like there still an issue with the DCA1000 connection. I couldn't get the data from DCA1000, sounds like an ethernet connection problem, also I couldn't read the FPGA version. Do you have any suggestions?

    thanks again.

  • Hi Jason,

Did make sure to follow the instructions under the section "Setup Static IP for Ethernet Data Transfer" from the guide I linked? These steps are required and if not taken ethernet connection issues can arise.

Also if you are not already aware, we have a DCA1000 debugging handbook which lists solutions to common problems when using radar EVM + DCA1000, can you please check this handbook for the error messages you are seeing and try the solutions listed?

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh, yes, I have tried different ways, but still I couldn't set up the ethernet connections with DCA1000. I even reflash the FPGA, the reflash process are very smooth, but still doesn't see any difference. mmWaveStudio still couldn't read the FPGA version, the error message is just timeout error and system disconnected, there is no error code on this error. One question about the ethernet is, I tried to ping 192.168.33.180 which is the DCA1000 address, but I don't have any response, what could cause that? I have turned off all the firewall settings on my laptop, and my laptop can ping other computer through the same cable.

    thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Can you confirm that the power supply you are using is 5V 3A? Also make sure your computer is disconnected from the wifi while performing the data collection as this might cause issues. You might also try switching to a different Ethernet cable. This can be known to resolve similar issues.

    Best Regards,

    Josh

  • Hi Josh, we tried on a different laptop which connected to a docking station ethernet port. It seems working now. Not sure why it's not working on my laptop, Really appreciate your help.

    thanks,

    Jason
