HDC3020-Q1: Thermal pad internal connection

Part Number: HDC3020-Q1

Hello,

Is the thermal pad on the HDC302x-Q1 package internally connected to ground or is it floating?  I would like to know what happens if that pad is connected to a net other than ground.

Thank you and best regards,

Jessica

  • HI Jessica,

The HDC302x-Q1's thermal pad is not internally connected to GND or any other signal on the HDC302x. When laying out the HDC3x on a PCB, you don't need to connect the thermal pad to the GND pin or any other net, the copper pad its soldered to can be left floating. I do not recommend connecting it to another net.

If you are planning to use the integrated heater on the device, then I would recommend not soldering the thermal pad at all. This is because when the heater is activated, much of the thermal energy we want to radiate into the device to heat it up will be dissapated into the PCB through the thermal pad, which is lost heat. But if you dont plan to use the integrated heater, soldering the thermal pad is fine.
