IWR6843AOPEVM: Fall Detection

We are looking for IWR6843AOPEVM for fall detection. We are building a system where we will need to prepare 3/4 IWR6843AOPEVM per module for elderly fall detection.

We have some questions which we need to understand -

Our product going to be a battery operated unit in case of emergency. Therefore the power consumption is a big consideration of the design philosophy.

We searched internet for information about putting the Chip into Off Mode or something similar. But we couldn't find any. Maybe it's not available in Public??

So can you maybe point us in the right direction to switch off the chip through software to reduce power consumption.

Plus details about wakeup time to get back to working state

Or is there no way and the only way is cutting the power to the chip physically? if that's the case, what will be the bootup time from a cold start for this chip?

Switching is paramount for us as we cant keep all the IWR6843 all the time.

Hello,

Please refer to this application note for power optimization with xWR6843. This document describes the implementation of different optimization techniques along with both their degree of power savings and their associated design tradeoffs. We also provide a demo which implements many of these techniques. The user guide for this demo can be found here.

Also, since power consumption is a very important aspect of your design, I wanted to check if you have considered our newer low power device IWRL6432. This device was designed with battery operated systems in mind and can enable you to achieve much lower average power consumption compared to the IWR6843.

Hi Josh,

Can we test both boards and see point cloud. Actually what we need to see is IWR6432 is good enough to generate a good point cloud to distinguish a person in case of fall detection or we will need IWR6843.

We can return the boards once my engg analysis both datas, please advise.

Hi Josh,

One question - is the point cloud on IWRL6432 good enough than the IWR6843. Do you have any videos to share where you used IWRL6432. If all ok we will buy the board.

we also need more info on the following -

1. What are the downside of IDLE Mode Implmentation?

2. What are the downside of Full Power Down Scheme? (What is the start up time)

3. Our PCB will require atleast 4 IWR6432 or 4 IWR6843 chips. Does this means we will need 4 DSP chips as well?

For 3, The IWR6843 has integrated ARM Core + DSP as well as a hardware accelerator. The IWRL6432 has ARM Core and hardware accelerator but no DSP. For either case you should already have the resources required for the basic radar processing and additional higher level processing for fall detection. Therefore additional DSP chips should not be required.

Please let me check on the timing info for the low power implementation and get back to you.

We are thinking of buying the IWRL6432BOOST devkit. Is this enough for uploading the codes and testing/debugging?

Or do we need another carrier board of somekind?

The IWRL6432BOOST is indeed sufficient for uploading code and testing/debugging. No other boards are required.
