TMAG3001: A sensor that outputs the amount of movement in x,y coordinates

Guru 12135 points
Part Number: TMAG3001

Hi,

I'm looking for a sensor for a device that records trajectories drawn freehand.

Are TI products releasing sensors that output the amount of movement in x and y coordinates, such as those used in mouse computers?

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hi Conor,

Thank you for posting to the Sensors forum!

What kind of sensor are you looking form (magnetic, inductive, capacitive, optical, etc.)?

If you are looking for a hall sensor solution, you can use something like the TMAG3001 which you can use to monitor the magnetic field around the device. With this information, you can essentially map out the position of the magnet with relation to the device.

  • Hi Alicia,

The type of sensor does not matter. Can a Hall sensor be used to detect the (X,Y) position like a mouse?
We are considering recording the trajectory drawn freehand.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Connor,

To help me understand better, when you say:

We are considering recording the trajectory drawn freehand

Are you referring to something similar to a trackpad on a laptop?

Or are you asking about the kind of sensors that are typically used for a traditional mouse?

  • Hi Alicia,

We are considering both sensors, so if you have any product suggestions, please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Conor

  • Hi Connor,

For the optical sensors used in a traditional mouse, please see the following link for optical proximity sensors that TI offers (Optical Proximity sensors). I would recommend asking a related question with one of the linked optical devices listed as the part number to ask the Optical Sensing team if they have any device recommendations for you on that end.

Regarding the trackpad option, I am currently discussing this with my team and will aim to provide a response early next week.
