AWR2944EVM: RS232 connection error with AWR2944EVM

Part Number: AWR2944EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2944, IWR1843

Hello,

We have recently ordered the AWR2944EVM development kit and are trying to make first test with mmWave Studio in development mode.

All LEDs are correctly lit up and we managed to collect a first set of measures but trying to collect new measures on another day we get an error as seen on the image below. It happens during the RS232 connection (2nd) step in mmWaveStudio. We didn't change anything on the hardware or software side in between both tests.

Is seems to us the error is linked to the USB connection despite everything being set up correctly. We are using mmWave Studio 3.1.1 with up to date drivers and we can see that the XDS110 is detected by the computer (see second image below). We have tried all common fixes such as trying different cables or computers, trying different baud rates, double checking the DCA switches and the AWR2944 jumpers to enable development mode of the radar chip (SOP2), and also inspected the microUSB connection port under a microscope to make sure there are no visible defects.

After the first successful test (when we managed to collect measures) we have documented the entire setup in a 'user guide' which you can also find attached below.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions to solve this issue. We have also made similar tests with the IWR1843 model and it is working perfectly fine.

Kind regards,

Piotr Banach

  • Dear Piotr -

Thanks for the post and welcome to E2E!

Here, reading through the document you attached, there are several things you might want to correct.

    1. Section A, 2c - this is covered on page 18 of the AWR2944EVM user manual: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruj22a/spruj22a.pdf

    2. Section B, 1a  - Position/Usage of S1 is covered on page 21, in the AWR2944EVM user manual (link above)

    3. Section B, 1b - Position/Usage of S2 is covered on page 22, in the AWR2944EVM user manual (link above)

    4. Section C - there is a note on page 11 of the AWR2944EVM user manual (link above) which directly discusses powering up EVM before USB cables are connected.

For the issue you have, I personally have had some issue when using hubs - you may want to try without it (direct to PC) or with a powered hub.

  • Dear Josh,

Thank you for your suggestions and going through our document.

Small question concerning your 2nd point - should we set the S1 switch as shown on page 21 of the official user manual (neutral position in the middle) or set it in "up" position (XDS interfacing) as in our document?

We have also tried connecting without a hub and unfortunately it doesn't change anything.

Would you have any other suggestions on what to do?

    Kind regards,

    Piotr Banach

  • Hello,

On the AWR2944 the RS232 port is connected to the 4th port of the FTDI. In your case you need to use COM18, not COM11.

The XDS110 is not needed for mmWave Studio, so you can just remove that USB connection and only use the FTDI.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • Hello Adrian,

This solved the issue for us, many thanks!

    Kind regards,

    Piotr
