TMP61: Embedding TI Thermistor into mechanical enclosure

We are currently using an off the shelf 10K NTC thermistor as shown below. The thermistor uses a strap that is clamped around a metal pipe which we measure temperature across. We would like to replace this with the TI TMP61. Our belief is we can stick the TI part in a simple enclosure similar to this and basically replace it as a drop in. Is there any reason to think that should not work for us? Should the thermistor body be in direct contact with the metal pipe? We are looking to achieve +/-1C accuracy across a 0C to 80C range.

    In general, TMP61 is a good replacement for NTCs due to it's linearity (improved performance and sensitivity at high temperatures), lower self heating and power consumption at high temperatures, and the fact that you do not need to perform any calibration. That being said, there are a few considerations you need to take to see if this is a drop in replacement in your application. For example, TMP61 requires to have a bias R of 10k on the high side if you are using a voltage supply to bias the circuitry--which I assume you are since you are using an NTC right now. This is due to the fact that we have characterized TMP61 over supply and temperature using a 10k ohm resistor and thus we offer the different methods to convert to temperature based on this characterization data.
