IWR6843: the value bounds for rxgain

Hello,

I am using IWR6843AOP ES2.0, and noticed that the default configuration files have wide range of values for rxgain in the profileCfg field. In particular, a value of 30 dB is used for the area scanner lab while a value of 158dB (I think it's dB but not sure about that!) is used in the Out Of the Box configuration generated using the demo visualizer tool.

I found the document "structrl_profile_cfg__t.html" in the mmwavelink doxygen files, which states a range from 30dB to 48dB for IWR6843 ES 2.0 and was wondering if there is any further explanation about the accepted range of values for rxgain and also will choosing a higher value for rxgain (for example 158 as in the OOB) lead to higher noise in the system?

Hello.

The 158 that you see is the combination of the RF gain and the RX gain. 158 in hex is 9E, which comes out to 10011110. The first 6 LSB bits are the RX gain, and the remaining are the RF gain. Higher RX gain means that you will get more points but you will have to adjust the CFAR a bit to filter out noise that may get through.
