AWRL6432BOOST: AWRL6432BOOST (AWRL6432_Capon2D)

Part Number: AWRL6432BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWRL6432, AWR6843, AWR6843ISK

Hi,
I have AWRL6432BOOST. I am using "radar_toolbox_1_30_00_05\source\ti\examples\InCabin_Sensing\AWRL6432_Capon2D" as SDK.
I am testing the device in the car. I did changes to detect other passengers excluding driver in software. Something about the detection of rear seat passengers caught my attention, but I wasn't entirely sure. The radar device is mounted above the interior rearview mirror. If there are only passengers in the back seat of the vehicle, it detects this very well and maintains this situation almost constantly. However, when the passenger in the back seat remains in place and another passenger sits in the front seat (driver's seat), the perception of the passenger in the back seat is not uninterrupted. Occasionally, the passenger is not detected for a while and then is detected again. However, such a problem does not occur when there is no passenger in the front seat. It is not possible for the passenger in the front seat to block the way of the passenger in the back seat. I'm not sure if this problem is caused by software or not. Do you have any experience or observations on this subject?

  • Hi, there:

So, there is a person seating on driver seat.  For your second-row passenger, where did he/she seat? on the driver side or on the passenger side?

  • Thanks for your quick answer,
This does not matter, the problem is the same whether it sits on the driver's side, passenger side or in the middle. Frankly, I was worried that this is a problem with the sensor's detection.

  • Hi, Cevad:

For this device, the angle resolution is not very good.  It will be hard to detect multiple target in the same range bin.  The driver seat and the second-row passenger should locate in different range bins.  But some part of the driver's body may fall into the same range as the second row passenger.  In addition, there can be some multipath reflection from the driver that disturbing the higher range bins.   In summary, I do not have an answer.  If the driver keeps very still, will the second-row passenger more detectable?

This application is for life presence detection.  Are you trying to use it for SBR (seat belt reminder)?

    Zigang

  • Hi, Zigang,

When I changed the driver area in the configuration file so that it does not conflict with the passengers in the back row, the result did not change. I haven't tested the drive remaining stationary, I'll try that too.
You wrote that the angle resolution of the device is not very good. I bought this device because it was claimed to be good at detecting in-car occupants. And as you mentioned, I have been working on it for a long time to use it on seat belts and similar issues. Do you recommend another device?
Actually, I need clear information on this subject to continue the project with this device. Can your party make a clear determination of the problem I mentioned by performing tests in the vehicle?

  • Hi, Cevad:

We have been evaluate AWRL6432 for CPD/LPD application only.   We have not done any evaluation for SBR application with this device.  We feel multiple people detection in a moving car will be challenge with AWRL6432 device and SBR probably will need at least 3x4 antennas.   We has been using AWR6843 device for SBR evaluation so far.

Although we have never done any evaluation for SBR with AWRL6432Boost EVM.  You can still try different mounting position/angle, or play with the algorithms.  Even if two-row does not work, maybe you can change your project to make one row SBR work with a different antenna design and etc.

  • Hi, Zigang

We bought an AWR6843ISK and waiting for it to arrive. However, I want my work with AWRL6432Boost not to be in vain and for the performance of that device to be fully clear. I made changes to the threshold values in the occStateMach parameter. But I realized that the problem could not be solved that way. As far as I understand from reviewing the documents, I need to change the cfarCfg parameters in order to detect the passengers in the back seat more accurately when there is someone in the driver's seat. I think I can filter out the presence of the driver by changing some threshold values in the cfarCfg parameter.

I would be grateful if you could give me information about which parameters in cfarCfg should be changed and in what direction. Because I couldn't find much detail about this in the documentation.

  • Hi, there:

In the CPD users guide, you can find some related information, search for "dynamicRACfarCfg" and "Point Cloud Tuning"
