FDC1004EVM: does not connect

Part Number: FDC1004EVM

At first, EVM had red light when inserted to USB.

After driver install, GUI still reported no connection.

Following GUI instructions, I set file reference and pressed upload firmware button.

After a few minutes, GUI reported failed upload: reconnect module.

On unplug and replug USB, module had white (ish) light, still not connected.

Tried firmware again, no effect, Un/re plugged again, light went out.

Now there is no light, seems like its dead.

  • Hello,

A failed firmware update likely put the EVM in an unknown state and you will have to re-flash the firmware. To do this, you can follow the steps listed in the following E2E post: https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/1053402/faq-my-inductive-sensing-evm-won-t-connect-to-the-gui-how-can-i-fix-it

For the FDC1004EVM, you would need to short across R40 and C6 where the blue arrow is in the image below. The firmware file for the firmware upgrade tool will be the same one you choose when doing a normal firmware update through the GUI.

  • This procedure seems to have reloaded firmware to module. It powers up with a green light. However, on trying to connect with EVM GUI, the bottom bar reports connected for two seconds, then not connected for 16 seconds in a repeating cycle. The GUI seems to have communication when connected, as registers and configs show data for two seconds, then no connection for 16 seconds, repeating.

  • Hello,

Sorry you are still having issues after the firmware reload. Can you clarify the following for me:

    • Are you plugging in the EVM through a USB hub or directly to a port on your computer? If using a hub, can you confirm the behavior is the same for a direct port on your computer?
    • How does the EVM show up in your device manager? It should show up under the com ports section
    • Are you using the latest version of the Sensing Solutions GUI (v1.10.0)?
    • What computer OS are you using?

    Best Regards,

    Justin Beigel

  • EVM plugged directly to USB / no hub

Shows as PORTS / EVM (COM4)

    yes V1.10.0

    machine: TOSHIBA Satellite A305

OS: windows vista home premium   6.0.6002 SP2 build 6002

  • Hello,

Can you confirm if the EVM is disconnecting from the computer or if it is just the GUI that is having the connection issues to the EVM?

The sensing solutions GUI was developed starting with windows 7 so I am not sure how well it works on windows vista. Do you have a computer with a newer OS that you can try?

  • I was experimenting with the usb port settings for EVM-COM4 (which always reset to default anyway)

when I inadvertently restarted EVM-GUI. The connection became stable. I had restarted GUI before with no effect. I made no other changes. It just started working. If after working with it for a day or two it remains functional, I will mark the issue as resolved. Thank you for your help.

  • Hello,

Glad that resolved your issue. Let us know if that continues to work or if you have any additional questions.
