AWR2243: VCO selection

Part Number: AWR2243

Hi, TI expert

I have a question about VCO selection on AWR 2243.

1. On the first page of datasheet,  it shows the phase noise is -96 dBc/Hz (76 to 77GHz) and -94dBc/Hz (77 to 81 GHz). But in chapter 8.7 RF Specifiicaiton it shows -96 dBc/Hz (76 to 78GHz, VCO1) and -94 dBC/Hz (76 to 81 GHz, VCO2). I'm very confused about the different bandwidth description. Can you please explain the difference?

2. 76~78GHz is  used in my design, which VCO should I choose for the best phase noise?

3. if I use 76~79GHz, which VCO should I choose?

Thanks.

  • Hello Baolong, apologies for the delay in responding to your question.  We have two VCOs in the design, to allow the user to tradeoff tuning range/chirp bandwidth for phase noise.  For your design, I would recommend to use VCO1 if you can stay below 78 GHz.  If you go to 79 GHz, then you have to use VCO2.  VCO1 does not operate above 78 GHz.
