AWR6843: The resistance between antenna pin and ground pin measured by multimeter

Hi,

We want to confirm whether the antenna pin was shorted to ground pin after reflow soldering, it was not still confirmed completely after x-ray checking, could we check it by dc resistance with multimeter ? In our experience, the dc resistance between antenna pin and ground

Pin is zero, why?

Sorry, I am a baseband engineer is not familiar with RF design

Hi Michael,

DC resistance between the GND pin and antenna pin would always be zero as it is internally connected. This method of measuring DC resistance with multimeter wouldn't help you distinguish between actual short. So, it is suggested to do gamma measurement and check if it gives a poor value. If the value is near zero, then there should be a short or ball breakage.

"DC resistance between the GND pin and antenna pin would always be zero as it is internally connected", what is the internal connection between the GND pin and antenna pin of the AWR6843? could you explain it more detail ?

Also, what is the gamma measurement ?

Hi Michael,

The output power to the antenna comes from transformer coupled to the internal multistage power amplifiers. One side of the transformer goes to the antenna and the other to the gnd. Thus, when measuring the DC resistance between antenna pin and GND pin it will always give zero. To see if there is any shortage or ball breakage you can run the power monitor APIs that will give you the gamma measurement. Gamma is the reflection coefficient, i.e., ratio of reflected power to incident power.
