AWR2944EVM: The hardware changes of DP83tc812 PHY chip from RGMII interface to RMII interface

Part Number: AWR2944EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2944, DP83TC812R-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi,

Now we have a media converter board form 100BASE-T1 to 100BASE-TX,but it MAC interface is RMII interface.  If we configure AWR2944EVM as RGMII interface for the chip  DP83tc812 PHY. In the theory, can they sucessfully  set up a link between them?Or the MAC interface mode must be consistent between AWR2944EVM and our board? If yes, now we want to  change the  MAC interface from RGMII interface to RMII interface in the AWR2944EVM, where should the hardwares be changed? Where should be changed in the syscfg file form RGMII interface to RMII interface?

BR,

Rata

  • Hi Rata,

The Interface between AWR2944 and PHY on the EVM has no relation with any external boards.

  • Hi Ajay,

Maybe I made a unclear description and I redescribe my problem as below.

Firstly,  we have an AWR2944WVM,which supports two RGMII Ethernet ports. The J4 connector provides access over a MATEnet port  via a DP83TC812R-Q1 PHY. The J9 port provides access over an RJ45 port via a DP83867ERGZR PHY. By default, the RGMII interfaces areconnected to the J9 port only. Now we want to  access the RGMII interface over the J4 connector. We have populated some resistors as description in the AWR2944AWR User’s Guide.

Secondly, now we want to conduct a communication between AWR2944EVM and computer by our media converter board (which changes from 100BASE-T1 to 100BASE-TX).  We connet AWR2944EVM and our media converter board by an UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) cabling . The MAC interface of our own board is RMII interface, while AWR2944EVM is  RGMII. The link speeds are both 100 Mbps and  MAC interface duplexity are both full duplex.

Thirdly, in the thory, can they sucessfully set up a link between them if there is no any error in the hardware and softare? Or must the MAC interfaces be consistent,  either it's both RMII interface, or it's both RGMII interface? That is to say, is the differential signal on the UTP  related to the MAC interface types? Or the differential signal on the UTP cabling obeys specific protocols and there is no relation with the MAC interface types.

    BR,

    Rata

  • Hi Rata,

The MAC interface i.e. RGMII/RMII etc is the interface between AWR2944 and the PHY on the EVM. This interface does not have any dependency or relevance outside the EVM. Your media converter board can have any MAC interface, it does not concern the AWR2944 EVM.

    Ajay

  • Hi Ajay,

That is to say, the differential signal on the UTP cabling obeys specific protocols and there is no relation with the MAC interface types,is that right?

    BR,

    Rata

  • Hi Rata,

Yes, the protocol in the differential signal is different from the mac interface signals. There is no dependency on each other.

    Ajay

  • Hi Ajay,

Thanks for your relpy, I got it.
