Hello,

I want to test radar for an application, where an angular resolution in the range of the MMWCASRF-EVM is needed. The application only has to detect targets up to a range of 10m. As the range of the design states a range of >350m the question arises if this is the suiting development kit for that application or if a dedicated short range radar development kit should be used. I did not find any short range kits with that angular resolution.

Hello Felix,

You might consider using other cascade kits. The angular resolution is determined by the number of antenna elements. See this document section 2.3.1

Hello James,

I did not find any other cascade kits with that angular resolution (I know there is a kit with 2 AWR2243 chips). I don't think its possible to cascade multiple e.g. AWR2243BOOST or other evaluation boards, as the physical arrangement of the antenna arrays of the individual boards does not fit the requirement for the antenna array of a MIMO Radar (as e.g. displayed in https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru553a/swru553a.pdf?ts=1717600340496 pg. 25f) and there is no common LO. or am I missing something? Can I just cascade 2 eval kits with e.g. 3TX and 4RX to get a radar with 6TX and 12RX?

Hi Felix,

Apologies, what I meant was you can cascade the devices to get better angular resolution, but using your own design, not a kit. If you want to only work with a kit, then the MMWCASRF-EVM is the best option.

hi James, thanks for your reply, then back to my initial question :) can I tune the eval kit in such a manner, that it is suited for shorter distances (>120°, 1m-30m distance)? So by only changing the configuration of the radar chipsets?

Hi Felix,

You can definitely tune the chirp parameters accordingly for shorter range, if that is your desire. Refer to the 'programming chirp parameters' document which I referenced earlier.
