TMP114: Does magnetic field affect the operations of the Temp sensors?

Part Number: TMP114

Tool/software:

Hi temp sensor experts,

My customer wants to know if any nearby ICs or magnetic fields could affect the normal operation of the TMP114. Could you answer this?

If yes, is there any guidance regarding the recommended distance between the TMP114 and other devices when layouts?

Thanks,

Jay

  • Hi Jay,

There should be no issue if the TMP114 is mounted close to other devices and ICs. The TMP114 temp reading may be affected by heat generating ICs/devices, so depending on the specific application this may affect the optimal layout.

If you are trying to measure ambient air temperature, it is better to avoid copper planes near the temp sensor that are connected to the copper planes of other ICs, place the temp sensor far away from heat generating ICs, and (if feasible) add a cutout on the board. Please checkout this app note section 2 for more details and options: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snoa967a/snoa967a.pdf

If the application is for component temperature measurement, you would want to locate the sensor as close to the heat source as possible. The same app note section 3 details this more, and additionally the TMP114 PicoStar package is thin enough to mount under some components (provided there's enough vertical clearance); see this app note for more details: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snia043a/snia043a.pdf

Feel free to respond with any additional questions. Thanks!

    Best regards,

    Sakeenah
