TPS51285B: Replace RT9203

Part Number: TPS51285B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS53015, TPS53014

Tool/software:

Hi

Could you help suggest products that can replace RT9203GS,Tks

  •

I don't see a direct cross for the RT9203GS, but we offer a number of small size single-phase external MOSFET controllers that would be able to serve in similar applications.

The TPS53014 and TPS53015 for example are 10-pin single phase BUCK controllers for driving external MOSFET which would be similar to the RT9203GS, but not drop in replacements.

We also offer converters with the MOSFTs integrated to reduce design and layout complexity while reducing size and BOM count if you are interested integrated MOSFET solutions.

  • Hi Peter

Thank you for your suggestions and comments

Can the LDO inside TPS53015 be used for external use?

  •

The LDO can be used to bias external circuits, but there are a few cautions:

    1) The internal LDO powers the MOSFET drivers, so there will be significant noise transients on the LDO output at the switching frequency as the drivers can draw several amperes of current for a few nano-seconds while the MOSFETs switch and the boot-strap resistor recharges.

    2) The internal LDO power the MOSFET drivers, which will draw current based on the MOSFET total gate charge and switching frequency.  The total loading on the LDO including DRVH, DRVL and external loading should not exceed 80mA to avoid the potential of current limiting the LDO.

    3) The TPS53015 power dissipation will include the drop from VIN to LDO with the loading current of the LDO and drivers, so total power dissipation will need to be limited based on ambient temperature and power dissipation capabilities of the PCB the thermal pad is connected to.

It is generally recommended that external loads are low-noise, low current bias circuit and that an R-C filter is used between the LDO and external loads to avoid noise injection into the TPS53015 or noise from the TPS53015's switching into the external loads.
