TMP006 Calibration

We are having difficulty calculating the Sensitivity factor S0.

After following the calculations presented in the TMP006 User's guide (SBOU107.pdf) we end up with a Sensitivity factor that is negative and outside the typical range specified in the user's guide.  As part of the calibration procedure, we've taken a set of raw temperature and voltage readings from the TMP006 (see table below).  The object being measured is a large anodized aluminum block that is placed about 1/16th of an inch in front of the sensor (blocking the entire field of view).  This block temperature is controlled and accurately measurable.  We have also painted this block with lampblack paint to ensure good emissivity.

Here is the sample data we are using:

We've had a couple of different engineers at our company independently calculate the Sensitivity factor based on the calculations presented in the User's guide using our data and they both ended up with the exact same results (which don't make sense) .  The plot of slope of the Calibration Function vs (Tobj^4-Tdie^4) that we get has a negative slope instead of the positive slope that is shown on page 11 of the User's guide.  We are very confident that our math exactly matches what is presented in the User's guide.  We are using Kelvin everywhere that a temperature is used in the calculations even though the User's guide doesn't explicitly say this.

Has anyone here had a similar experience or has any suggestions for what might be going on?

    After going through the calculation I have the same results as you and found that the slope of the Calibration Function vs. (TOBJ4 - TDIE4) is negative. Using the two endpoints I calculated a slope of -1.4E-13.

    It wasn't clear at first glance, but after going through the calibration I realize that something is strange with your "Vraw" data. As the object temperature increases, the sensor voltage decreases (becomes more negative). This should not be the case, as sensor voltage is directly proportional to the amount of IR energy received and therefore object temperature. Were you using the TMP006EVM for your data collection? If not, then it's possible that there is an issue with your layout or something else in your system which is causing improper sensor behavior.

    If you are using the EVM, then I recommend re-taking data at each of your object temperature set points while using the "Save Temperature Data" function built into the TMP006EVM software (found in the "USB Controls" file menu). With the full set of parameters recorded by the software we should be able to achieve a successful calibration.

    Thanks for the help.  We are not using the TMP006EVM for the data collection.  Instead, we are using a circuit board that we designed.  I was told by our engineer who did the layout that he followed the layout guide, but as you suggested we must have something wrong with the hardware.  I guess this means back to the lab!

    When we find out what is going on I'll be sure to follow up this thread with a post.
