TDC1000: Maximum Sampling Rate

Part Number: TDC1000

Tool/software:

I am trying to calculate the maximum sampling rate of an ultrasonic sensor using a 1 MHz transducer for a TOF measurement in liquid. Can I simply sum the time of flight with the emitted and received pulses duration to get the total duration of a measurement sequence ? Or is there a minium delay time between measurements ?

Thanks

  • Hello Leandre,

Thanks for posting to the sensors forum! My recommendation for a sampling rate is typically taking your largest target time of flight you are trying to support and adding some additional headroom for triggering the measurement so the time it takes for you to command the start the next measurement + the small amount of time it takes for the device to generate the pulses.

The minimum delay between measurements may depend on how you are timing your pulses. If the next measurement is short and your timing mechanism isn't ready then this may cause some issues with the results.

  • Hi Isaac,

The software that comes with the TDC1000-C2000 evaluation kit has a minimum trigger rate of a 100 ms. Based on your previous answer I should be able to trigger the sensor much faster. I guess that the 100 ms is a limitation of the evaluation software. Can you confirm ? For a measurement at 400mm (800 mm round trip) and a velocity in the fluid of 1300 m/s, the TOF of flight would be 600us which would give a sampling rate of 1.6 kHz. With some headroom I am assuming that a sampling rate of around 1kHz is possible.

    Thanks

  • Hello Leandre,

Yes the 100ms trigger rate is just due to GUI limitations, you can definitely achieve a measurement rate that is much faster than this. A 1ms sampling rate should be more than doable by the TDC1000. My recommendation would be to check the devices settings to see if you can set the measurement cycle/listening windows as needed to meet your application. These can be seen on page 27 and 28 of the datasheet.
