AWR2944: detection of UAV

Hi, experts

I want to use AWR2944 or any radar chips suggested by TI to do the UAV detection. The equipment is located on the ground.

I know AWR2944 is prefered for vehicle products. Not sure it is usable for UAV detection or any solution from TI for UAV detection is available?

Can TI give a solution to satisfy the requirements below ?

My requirements are listed here:

1. rang of height of UAV that will be detected : <=120m

2. RCS ~0.04m2 (unit : square meter)

3. range of speed of UAV that will be detected: from 1-2m/s to 20~30m/s

Hi Hao,

I will check and get back to you in 2 days. Detecting objects with very low RCS at 120m might not be possible. You can take a look at the following documents -

Hi Bobba,

thanks for your effort. "Detecting objects with very low RCS at 120m might not be possible" -- for this one, if not possible, the RCS parameter can be relaxed and keep the height requirement.

Hi Hao,

Maximum range of an object (car) that can be detected by AWR2944 is around 220m. In the case of AWR1843, it can detect a car at a range of 150m. Let me check with the team and get back to you to suggest appropriate device for your usecase.

Hi Bobba,

thanks! one thing i need to highlight here, My usecase is not for car but UAV detection, therefore i think the Azimuth angle and elevation angle are also very important since the signal from radar need to cover the space that any UAV may fly through (we plan to deploy the radar sensors on the ground every ~500m )

Hello Hao.

If you are looking to do long range detection while preserving azimuth and elevation, I believe the 2243 2-chip cascade solution should meet those requirements. However, the 2243 2-chip cascade solution requires an external/host processor as it is a front-end only device and has no on-chip processing capabilities.
