HDC1080: Dew point calcutation in Medical air Compressor using HDC1080

Part Number: HDC1080
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC3020

Tool/software:

Hi,

I would like to know if the HDC1080 humidity sensor is suitable for use in a medical air compressor application to calculate the dew point. Could you please provide guidance or share any relevant documentation?

Thank you.

  • Mehmet,

Could you please share some more details about your application? What are the anticipated temperature and humidity conditions that sensor will be exposed to? Is the sensor going to be in a pressurized environment because its an air compressor? Any risk of exposure to liquid water?

For new designs, I would recommend our HDC3020, our newest generation humidity sensor. HDC1080 is not recommended for new designs. Dew point can be calculated using the reported RH and temperature from the humidity sensor, but the usefulness/accuracy of that calculation will depend on your application. Please share more details if you can.

    Thank you.

  • Alex,

Thank you for your response and recommendation regarding the HDC3020 sensor. Below are the details of my application:

    • Application: The sensor will be used in a medical air compressor system to calculate the dew point.
    • Operating Conditions: Temperature ranges between 5°C and 50°C, with humidity levels from 1% to 90% RH.
    • Pressure Exposure: The sensor will operate in a pressurized environment of approximately 50 psi, as it monitors the dew point in compressed air systems.
    • Liquid Water Exposure: There will be no exposure to liquid water in this application.

I am aware that the dew point can be calculated using the reported RH and temperature. My focus is to ensure accurate and reliable dew point measurements under these conditions.

For instance, Honeywell's HIH8000 Series specifies suitability for air compressor applications in its datasheet.  HIH8000 and  HDC1080 look similar. I am curious if Texas Instruments' HDC3020 or HDC1080 sensor offers similar capabilities and can perform accurately in such an environment.

    Thank you.

    Mehmet

  • Mehmet,

Those RH and temp conditions are acceptable for our humidity sensors, and I would still recommend the HDC3020 family since it will have the best RH and temperature accuracy in that range of conditions.

Unfortunately, we do not have high-pressure data for any of our humidity sensors, so at this time I cannot guarantee how the sensor will perform at 50 psi.

  • Alex,

Thank you for your response. I have one more question. What measuring technique is used in HDC3020 and HDC1080, do they have polymer capacitive sensing element?

    Best

    Mehmet

  • Mehmet,

Yes you are correct, they have polymer with a capacitive sensing element.
