IWR6843ISK: Concealed metallic object detection

Part Number: IWR6843ISK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DCA1000EVM, MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843

Tool/software:

With the combination of DCA1000EVM and IWR6843ISK and MMWAVEICBOOST am interested to see if I can detect any concealed  metallic objects / Non-metals (am not sure if I can do for non-metals - Please confirm).  While I got to a stage where I can see the point clouds for human movement but somehow missing to detect the metallic objects such as knife, laptop etc.  Please guide me towards:

(A) The combination of boards am using (as above) is good towards my task?

(b) Am I failing just because of few configuration parameters ?

(c) Please guide me with right configuration parameters if am using right boards and falling only due to couple of configuration parameters.

(d) Please also guide me further if the above boards are not compatible towards my task?  Thanks.

  • Hello.

The ISK board should be enough; you can connect to the industrial visualizer in the radar toolbox and see the pointcloud without the DCA or the ICBOOST(The DCA is primarily used for data capture and the ICBOOST is used for debugging).  Are you using an existing configuration from the toolbox/SDK or is this a custom configuration?  If you are using an existing configuration, I would also check that the clutterRemoval CLI command is set to 0 as it will remove static objects from the scene as well as extra noise.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh

  • Hello Santosh,

Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

Yes, we are using the industrial visualiser provided in the radar toolbox. We have tried some of the provided configurations to test out the device and they are working fine. We are able to see the pointcloud for the persons and moving objects but not for metallic objects such as knife, laptop etc. Now we would like to explore a bit further and play with the parameters so that it can detect those concealed weapons precisely. So it's gonna be a custom configuration in a way to achieve identifying the concealed weapons (under clothes or in bags). What we are expecting is, if at all possible, a heatmap of the concealed weapons with the size and position where it is concealed with a person. Could you please help us in guiding towards those necessary parameters to achieve the same?

    Thanking you in advance!

  • Hi Nikhil,

I don't think it would be possible to use the IWR6843 to detect concealed metal on a person. We have found in similar testing that the reflectivity of a person and a metal object don't appear to be different enough an object concealed on a person using the IWR6843. If you wanted to achieve this, you would likely want to use a higher resolution radar.

    Best,

    Nate

  • Hello Nate,

Thank you for your insights. If it's not possible with IWR6843, would you please suggest us what could be the radar (and configuration) that is more appropriate for this use case and could potentially achieve the results what we are aiming for? (A heatmap of the concealed weapon with the size and position)

We would be happy to buy the radar and conduct the experiments further.

    Thanks

    Nikhil

  • Hi,

The only product we offer that may be feasible here is the cascaded 6243 radar. You can request access to the collateral for it here. Even this may not be enough to distinguish the person and the object they're carrying though. You will need to investigate to find out.
