LDC3114: Touch-Sensitive Switching Options

Part Number: LDC3114

Tool/software:

Hi. I have a requirement for a touch-sensitive switch. The touch pad must remain stationary, cannot move. The touch pad itself will be aluminum, and will be surrounded by an aluminum front panel. A PCB (coil trace?) sits underneath the touch pad metal (perhaps a 0.6" dia aluminum slug 0.3" long, not determined yet). Best I can tell, an inductive approach would be best. But it's not clear. In some app notes, it seems that the metal touch pad must move inward towards the coil. In other notes, it seems that the touch pad can be stationary. Thanks for any advice.
