IWR6843ISK: Help configuring mmwave radar sensor IWR6843ISK with DCA1000 to read up to 100m

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Tool/software:

Good afternoon,

I am trying to configure the IWR6843ISK radar unit to read data up to 100m. I made a custom configuration file with the mmwave sensing estimator and in MATLAB tried to configure the sensor with the example RecordProcessADCDataTIRadarBoardExample. I have it working with config files that are made for up to 25m of range but not for the one with the longer range one we made. Is this due to the prebuilt binary uploaded to the board and if so, is there a demo binary made for up to 100m of range or is there an application to make a binary that will solve this issue?

Thanks,

Nikolas

  • Hi Nikolas,

We are looking into your question and will get back to you soon. Thank you for your patience.

    Josh

  • Hello Nikolas,

It would be difficult to detect people at 100m range with only chirp configuration changes. However, you should be able to get around 60-70m consistently with a proper configuration which is much larger than 25m. You should check the chirp configurations seen in the Long Range People Detection demo as a reference. As found within the Radar Toolbox in the TI Developer Zone.

  • Hi Pedrhom,

I have used the long-range people tracker to detect a desired target up to 160m using the demo visualizer. However, when trying to download and analyze data using the Matlab radar toolbox, we are unable to upload a config file like the one in the Long Range People Tracking demo because it says it is not compatible with the demo binary flashed to the IWR6843ISK board. After flashing the binary file from the long range people tracking demo, Matlab is unable to stream data from the IWR6843ISK board because it says the binary file is out of date (version 3.5 but should be 3.6). Is there an updated binary file like the one in the long range people tracking demo that will work with MATLAB radar toolbox and will read radar signals up to 100m?

    Thanks,

    Nikolas

  • Hello Nikolas,

We have no binary that has both of what you need, but note that we do not have control over MATLAB's radar toolbox. That said there were no changes between SDK 3.5 and SDK 3.6 at least for the Long Range People Detection example, so if you can potentially override that error it may work okay.

    Best Regards,

    Pedrhom

  • Hi Pedrhom,

Unfortunately, I am unable to override the error and confused on why I am getting it has to SDK version if the is no change. Just to clarify the prebuild demo binary files the same as SDK files?

    thanks,

    Nikolas

  • Hello Nikolas,

Since this is the MATLAB tool you are using, I cannot support more than saying between SDK 3.5 and SDK 3.6 the long range people detection demo did not go through any changes. Any changes would be purely on the SDK side and not the demo files.

    Best Regards,

    Pedrhom
