IWR1642BOOST: Bird Nest detection

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1843, IWR6843, IWRL6432, IWRL1432, MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843ISK, IWR1843BOOST, MMWAVE-STUDIO, DCA1000EVM, CCSTUDIO

Tool/software:

Hello,

we are searching a radar sensor (to be mounted on tractor) in order to detect a Bird sitting on the nest (or eggs in the nest) with a range of 10-20m. The bird is of a size of pigeon.

What could be the best Hardware chip (mounted on PCB like IWR1642BOOST).

Thank you

  • Hello.

It is definitely possible, but a wide variety of devices could meet this requirement in terms of the intended range.  If power is not an important factor you could look into the IWR6843/IWR1843 which will provide better resolution due to the increase number of Tx's, but if power is an important criteria you could explore our low power platform including the IWRL6432/IWRL1432.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh

  • Hello Santosh,

    thank you for your reply.

Power is not a problem since the sensors are mounted on a Tractor.

We would then buy one of the two Options:

    1. IWR6843ISK ,MMWAVEICBOOST
    2. IWR1843BOOST

    Two questions :

    • for small body (bird) the IWR1843BOOST seems to be more suitable for our application since its Antenna peak gain is > 10.5 dBi with a frequency band 76 to 81 GHz , while the IWR6843ISK  gain is 7dBi with a frequency band of 60 to 64 GHz. Correct?
    • Is the DCA1000EVM needed to implement a customized application or code? Can we develop the appliacation using only MMWAVE-STUDIO and CCSTUDIO ?

    Thank you.

    Best Regards,

That is due to the antenna design on the EVM, and so if you did your own antenna design this could be different.  According to the datasheet, the receiver gain and the transmitter output power is the same for both the IWR6843 and IWR1843.

Is the DCA1000EVM needed to implement a customized application or code? Can we develop the appliacation using only MMWAVE-STUDIO and CCSTUDIO ?

It is not needed for code development.  It is only needed if you need to perform raw data collection.

    Sincerely,

    Santosh
