TDC1000: The comparison of liquid level detection solution

Part Number: TDC1000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSS4440, TDC1011, TUSS4470, , TDC7200, PGA460

Tool/software:

Hi TEAM,

My customer would like to applied ultrasonic to achieve liquid level detection in soymilk maker,

I read a application note of liquid level detection with TDC1000, but I notice there are TDC1011, TUSS4440, TUSS4470, Can you help to promote the best choice in below roadmap with reason? Thanks!

  • Hi Kailun,

Typically, this application is performed at 1MHz when the transducer is measuring through the liquid from the bottom of the container.

If they are looking to measure through air(top of the container), a lower frequency of ~100kHz is used.

TDC1000 is only recommended for 1MHz applications.  TDC1000 is typically paired with TDC7200 for the measurement of time of flight.

TUSS4440 supports 40kHz to 400kHz transducers, so this could be used for an air coupled application.  TUSS4470 supports 40kHz to 1MHz which can be used in either air or liquid coupled applications.  The connected microcontroller should handle the measurement of the time of flight.

Last, PGA460 could also be used in this application.  It supports 30kHz to 80kHz and 180kHz to 480kHz transducers.  The advantage of the PGA460 is that it also includes a DSP that is used for processing and measuring the time of flight.  It is more integrated than the TUSS devices, but would not be a good fit for liquid coupled applications.
