TDC7200EVM: TDC7200EVM under 35 ns

Part Number: TDC7200EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430F5529LP, TDC7200

Tool/software:

Hello

I have evaluation board TDC7200EVM with MSP-EXP430F5529LP and I try to measure TOF when start and stop impulse has 500 µs and delay between rise edge of start and rise edge of stop signal is 35 ns.
When I use GUI TDC7200EVM from TI, it cannot measure this value. When I change the delay to 200 ns, it works well. My question is. Can this evaluation board measure such short times? Can it measure such short times directly with TDC7200? Or is it possible to measure only large times with the above setup, but in high resolution?

My goal is to use this circuit to measure distances from 1 m to 50 m. I am trying to verify the functionality using an evaluation board, but it doesn't seem to work.

Regards

Ivan

  • Hello Ivan,

The TDC7200 has 2 different operating modes.  Mode 1 supports measurements from 12 ns to 500 ns.  Mode 2 supports 250 ns to 8 ms.  The EVM GUI defaults to mode 2, but you can change to mode 1 in the menu shown below.  If you are looking to measure a large range of ToF, you can switch between both modes in your application.  This functionality is not available in the GUI, but you could switch them manually to prove the concept.

  • Hello Eddie,

you are right :-) Now I measured 8,47 ns. It works well. Thank you very much!
