AWR2544LOPEVM: Is it possible to operate with mmWave Demo Visualizer?

Part Number: AWR2544LOPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DCA1000EVM, AWR2544

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have purchased the AWR2544LOPEVM and DCA1000EVM evaluation kits, and I want to operate the radar using the mmWave Demo Visualizer, as it is simpler and browser-based compared to mmWave Studio.

I understand that the mmWave Demo Visualizer supports the AWR2544LOPEVM. However, when I launch the mmWave Demo Visualizer and connect it to my PC, it detects the AWR2544 device, but when I press the "Send config to mmWave device" button, it does not plot any data. Upon checking the connection, it seems that the data transmission through the DATA_Port is not functioning correctly.

Could you please advise on what I should check or any steps I might have missed in the setup?

Thank you.

Regards,

Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

Please refer the user guide present in: C:\ti\mmwave_mcuplus_sdk_04_07_00_01\mmwave_mcuplus_sdk_04_07_00_01\docs\mmWave_Demo_Visualizer_UserGuide.pdf
This is dedicated for the AWR2544.

    Regards,
    Saswat Kumar

  • Thank you for your respose.

The manual you provided is based on Linux, correct? Is there a Windows-based manual available yet?

Also, does AWR2544 not support the mmWave Demo Visualizer on Windows in the first place?

  • Hello Shuhei,

What I gave is the path in windows itself. C:\ paths are generally windows and not linux based path system
You will have to download mmwave SDK 4.7.0.1
Then you can access it from windows.

  • Hello, Saswat,

Thank you for your reply. I have already installed the mmwave_mcuplus_sdk_04_07_00_01 and can view the user guide from Windows. I have also downloaded the mmWave_Demo_Visualizer_AWR2544.run.

This may be a basic question, but where can I download Xterm terminal for Windows?

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

You can directly use the command prompt right? I am not really sure on xterm.

    Saswat Kumar

  • Hello Saswat,

    thank you for your reply.
I was able to execute the run file and successfully launch the Demo Visualizer.

However, when I opened the Configuration Dashboard tab and tried to connect to the device, the "COM Port" and "Ethernet Port" were not set automatically. I tried setting them manually, but I got an error saying "Error in halting device."

Could you please advise me on what I should check?

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

Did you follow the exact steps?
Can you tell me where exactly in the steps it is failing? I assume the flashing step is working and there you could connect to ethernet and COM.
Can you tell me which mode of device are you in functional or flashing mode?

    Regards,
    Saswat Kumar

  • Hello Saswat,

I am following the steps as described. The point of concern is that it is not a complete Linux environment, but rather a Linux environment set up on Windows (I have installed WSL2 and am running Ubuntu).
I think this might be the cause.

COM connection was automatically detected and established, but the Ethernet connection was not successful.
The device is running in functional mode as described in the user guide.

How should I connect to Ethernet?

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

I am not completely sure if this will work with such a setup. From the linux side on your WSL2 can you check if you are able to get the ethernet up and running? This was meant for a pure windows environment so I am not sure if I can help you with any pointers with this as well.

    Regards,
    Saswat Kumar

  • Hello Saswat,

thank you for your attentive support. Yes, I confirmed that the Ethernet is working properly on the WSL2 Linux side, and I was able to check the IP address.

By the way, I don't have a pure Linux environment, so I have set up a virtual Linux environment on Windows. I would actually prefer to run it in a pure Windows environment, but since the user guide is written for a Linux environment, I am following the Linux method.

To run it in a pure Windows environment, is it correct that I should use the browser-based mmWave Demo Visualizer available on the AWR2544LOPEVM webpage (as shown in the attached image)?

    Regards,
    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

Sorry there was a typo in my last answer.
So the AWR2544 is completely based on the linux not windows.
The one you are referring is for windows which supports the rest of the devices in the family.
As 2544 LOP EVM sends the 1D FFT data over ethernet, it is done in linux environment. This is also for the fact that most processors also run the linux stack.

    Saswat Kumar

  • Hello Saswat,

thank you for your prompt reply.

So, the AWR2544 is Linux-based… That means it cannot be operated using the Windows DEMO VISUALIZER, right?

The image I attached in my very first question is a screenshot from the Windows DEMO VISUALIZER. It seems that the AWR2544 is recognized, but the data port connection appears to be incomplete.

Does this mean that, after all, it cannot be connected because it is not compatible with the Windows-based system?

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

Yes correct, windows based it will not function. And the reason for that is that the data port in other devices get the point cloud data. In case of AWR2544 as it is meant for satellite architecture, the pain job was to send the 1-D FFT data over ethernet.

  • Hello Saswat,

    I see.

I would like to try running the Demo Visualizer in a Linux environment.

Alternatively, I could use mmWave Studio.

mmWave Studio should work in a Windows environment, right?

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hello Shuhei,

Mmwave studio is only windows environment.

    Saswat Kumar

  • Hello Saswat,

    Thank you for your reply.
Understood. I will give it a try.
Thank you for teaching me so kindly.

    Shuhei
