IWRL6432AOPEVM: can the sensor part of the EVM be detached from the debug portion?

Hi,

is it possible to break off the sensor part of IWRL6432AOPEVM and still use it by connecting a 12-pin cable between J8 and J9?

This would allow more flexible placement of the sensor for evaluation.

Looking at the datasheet, it seems like this is not supported. The 12-pin connector has only 3.3V supply, while the device needs 3.3V and 1.8V supply for operation. Can you confirm this or direct me to corresponding documentation that shows how to operate the device just from 3.3V?
The 1.8V DCDC seems to be U20, which is located on the debug part of the EVM.

Sorry for the late reply.

The answer in a word is no, as it would require external supply of 1.8V and 1.2V. However, with some modification it could be done.

Do you want me to list down modification that would be required to enable this?

Sure Philipp. Please find below the list of modifications that would be needed:

1. Put SW2 to 3.3V position to provide 3.3V external input through 12 pin header

2. Break the engine area from the expandable area.

3. Blue wire 1.8V (TP14), 1.2V RF (TP16) and 1.2V (TP15) to provide the external power supply.

4. For Functional & Flashing mode: Switch “ON” SW3 and control through slide switch on expandable area.

Hi Philipp,

That would make the device run in its BOM optimized mode where the 1.2V would be generated from internal LDOs. In the present condition, that would not be supported since the decoupling capacitors are placed considering power optimized topology. In BOM optimized topology the decoupling capacitor spec for 1.2V is slightly tighter.

Do you wish to make the board BOM optimized?

Hi Swarnendu,

let me check with customer if they are fine providing 1.2V via jump wires also. It's currently in technology evaluation stage and they can hopefully fit additional cables.

Customer makes white goods and wants to integrate technology into the cover of the appliance for presence detection and possibly gesture recognition. It's key to them to figure out best placement as much of the space is already occupied by HMI. The need to fit only the sensor area will allow them far better evaluation.

In that case I presume all the supplies would be provided externally along with the communications. Do I read it wrong that they are trying to use the expandable area to mount the engine area or they are just trying to evaluate the engine area after breaking the board?
