HDC2080: HDC2080 Enclosure Design Guidance

Part Number: HDC2080
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC1080

Tool/software:

Dear TI Support,

I am currently working on a humidity sensor project and have selected the HDC2080 sensor.

Query:

Is there any application note or documentation that provides guidance on the enclosure design for the sensor (e.g., ventilation considerations, filter cover requirements)?

Thank you for your support.

  • HI Deepesh,

We have an application note that covers different options for enclosure design: Optimizing Placement and Routing for Humidity Sensors. This application note was made for the HDC1080 but it applies to the HDC2080 as well.

I strongly recommend you follow the design guidance this app note offers, both for the PCB design and the enclosure design. For best RH accuracy, it is key that the junction temperature of the HDC2080 is as close as possible to the ambient temperature. In practice, this means that you will need to thermally isolate the HDC2080 from other components on your PCB with cutouts and/or a perforated tab on the PCB, in addition to maximizing airflow. Understand that some design goals are trade-offs so understanding what parameters are most important is key. For example, you can place a PTFE filter on the vent opening to protect the HDC2080 from any dust or liquids. The tradeoff is that a filter will slow the RH response time.

Please reply back with any additional questions you have after reading the app note or when you start your enclosure design.

    Regards

    -Alex Thompson
