AWR2944EVM: PCB antenna Replicating Guidance

Part Number: AWR2944EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2944,

Tool/software:

Hi

We are developing an Automotive Radar Hardware with AWR2944 IC.

we are still in the early design phase, so we are planning to Replicate the same Patch Antenna that was used in the AWR2944EVM Board.
To do that we have the following doubts to be addressed,
1. Will following the same Layer Stack-up as of AWR2944EVM be sufficient (at-least for the Antenna perspective)
2. does the Layer Stack-up given for the Entire AWR2944EVM applies to the Antenna Region as well (or is there any different Stack-up island just in the Antenna Region)
2. do the AWR2944EVM Antenna Section have any additional Layers/Coatings on top of the Patch Antenna apart from the given Layer Stack-up

Thanks in Advance

  • Hi Surya,

    Please see my comments below.

    1. Following the same stack up as the EVM is a good starting point but you'll still need to run EM simulations to verify the antenna performance in your specific board. If you need later, we can provide the secured HFSS file under NDA.

    2. Could you please clarify what you mean in question 2? if you're asking whether the antenna region uses a separate stack up, no, the same PCB stack up applies across the board including the Antenna area.

    3. There are no additional coatings on top of the patch antenna, its exposed copper, as required for proper radiations.

  • Hi Aydin Kiasat,

Thank you for the Comments. they answered our questions.
We shall take it forward from here and will reach out on any further clarifications
    Thanks again

  • Hi Aydin Kiasat,

    1. Can we also know what is the impedance of the Antenna Trace for AWR2944EVM.
    2. can we use the same Top Layer antenna structure in a slightly different Layer-stack up (different thickness and Material) by maintaining the Antenna Trace impedance, Top Copper layer and below Substrate(dielectric) layer like in EVM stack-up ?
    3. will changing the layer stack-up of internal layers and core (thickness and material), effect the antenna performance.

    Thanks in Advance

  • Hi Surya,

    1. The CPGW is designed to have an impedance of ~50ohm. In the HFSS model, we typically include the transition, and you would take that and match your CPWG design.

    2. You can change the substrate or the stack up structure, but you will need to retune the transitions and run simulations to ensure the antenna design still performs as expected.

    3. The antenna structure is primarily influenced by the top layer patch, the ground plane just below, and the dielectric between them. Most antenna simulations are done using just these top two layers since inner layers below the ground plane typically don't affect performance unless there are layout issues like ground cutout or non-uniform planes.
