IWRL6432AOP: TI radar as range test box - target simulator

Part Number: IWRL6432AOP

Tool/software:

When making applications using TI radar device whether the same radar device can be used to

make range test box or target simulator, whether we can transmit the received signal with phase shift addition for

doppler simulation. Please clarify.

Thankyou.

  • Hi Mahalakshmi,

What I understand is, you want to use a second radar device to transmit with a phase shift to "simulate" doppler space for the subject (first) radar device.

Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

The biggest challenge in this would be that the LOs would be out of sync. This could pose error in the range space itself. Therefore, in doppler space it would matter significantly. And may not track the phase difference for the same range bin to detect a velocity.

With a proper range and phase bias calibration the velocity estimation is quite accurate for the radar devices. The range space could be tested and also the angle accuracy, to estimate the range and phase accuracy, which would give a good estimation of the doppler space accuracy without a direct validation.

Again, with some chirp modification the SNR of the received signal could be improved to have a improved detection.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks for the reply.

    I couldn't understand this para

"With a proper range and phase bias calibration the velocity estimation is quite accurate for the radar devices. Do you mean to say we can use the TI device as target simulator.

WE need to simulate the target for testing the range. In lab itself, two TI radars, one for radar and the other for target,

To simulate the target range from 5 meter to 25 meter

Whether we can loopback the received signal to Transmission with delay

    Please clarify.

  • Hi Mahalakshmi,

The radar device cannot receive a signal, add phase delay and transmit the same signal. So technically, the radar device cannot be used as a target simulator.

The range only could be tested in an indirect way using continuous wave (CW) signal. In this we can use TX of one device to validate RX of another. I can explain more on that if it seems to be useful. Let me know.

You can look at some of the low-cost set ups explained in: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracx7/spracx7.pdf (Section 2 Low-Cost Manufacturing Setup).

    Thanks,
