Hi, All.

I have question about Waveguide cut-out.

The plated waveguide cutout area is obviously connected to ground on the top and bottom layers, but is it also recommended to connect it directly to the ground on the inner layers?

What is the difference between connecting the inner layers to ground and isolating them from ground? Are there any related simulation data or results available?

Hi Manwoo,

If the inner layers are not connected to ground, there's a risk of mechanical bulging in the waveguide which we've observed in the past. This can impact RF performance due to discontinuities or poor grounding. To ensure mechanical integrity and consistent grounding, it's recommended to tie all inner ground layers to the top and bottom ground through the waveguide itself.

If mechanical bulging does not occur, is there no performance difference between connecting and not connecting the inner layer GND to the waveguide cutout?

Hi Manwoo,

There would be no difference in RF performance but as I mentioned, there will be a high chance of mechanical bulging which will lead to impedance mismatch/reflections and cause performance issues.
