TMAG5170: Sensor Selection Verification

Part Number: TMAG5170

Tool/software:

I have a design that needs to track the proximity of a magnet in close proximity of this sensor. The maximum range of motions is around 4mm and the maximum distance away from the sensor will be 15mm.

The event can be as fast as 0.6ms, and I need to detect this event with reasonable resolution. The TMAG running over SPI shows a 10mhz bandwidth and 20ksps sampling. is it reasonable to expect this device to provide an adequate resolution of the event  ? Would ideally be tracked in 2 axis but 1 axis will do and if this can provide the resolution, can the Alert be setup to trigger based on this event being detected

  • Hi Johann,

Thank you for posting to the Sensors forum!

With the magnetic sensing event happening as fast as 0.6ms, in order to capture it a sampling rate of at least 1.667ksps is needed. As you mentioned wanting to track it with 2 axis, the fastest sampling rate for 2 axis would be 13.3ksps which should be more than enough.

This device does offer a magnetic switch mode which allows you set magnetic thresholds for X, Y, and/or Z. In terms of resolution, I would recommend using TIMSS, which is a magnetic simulation tool that we offer, to help get an estimate on what the the output of the TMAG5170 should look like.
