IWR6843AOPEVM: Issues running modified chirp configuration breathing detection on Industrial Visualizer

Part Number: IWR6843AOPEVM

Tool/software:

Dear experts,

I am a student conducting experiments to detect human breathing rates at short range (15–20 cm) using a mmWave radar. However, the default vital_signs_AOP_2m.cfg does not meet my testing requirements — the detected breathing rate is inaccurate or the detection stops altogether.

After completing the Radar Academy training, I used the mmWave Sensing Estimator to modify the chirp configuration. However, when I applied the modified chirp configuration in Industrial Visualizer, the system failed to run and showed the following error:

ERROR [gui_parser.py:78] ERROR: No data detected on COM Port, read timed out
ERROR [gui_parser.py:79] Be sure that the device is in the proper mode, and that the cfg you are sending is valid

My questions are as follows:

  1. Is this error caused by my modified chirp configuration being incompatible with the "Vital Signs with People Tracking" mode in Industrial Visualizer?

  2. For short-range (15–20 cm) breathing detection, are there any other parameters or areas that should be modified to improve detection?

  3. Would it be possible to obtain the source code of Industrial Visualizer for further customization?

Best regards,
Tim

  • Hi Tim,

Vital signs processing chain is closely related to the configuration used, Demo is not flexible with other chirp configurations. Specific chirp configuration is selected such that breath rate and heart rate frequencies are detectable. Demo cannot accommodate other chirp configurations
