AWR1843BOOST OOB Demo – Range drops when ego vehicle is moving

Hi,

I'm using the AWR1843BOOST with the Out of Box demo. While testing on a moving vehicle, I'm seeing that the detection range drops from ~45 m (when stationary) to ~20–25 m.

I expected around 70 m range based on the Sensing Estimator(screenshot is attached below). Lowering the SNR threshold improves range (up to 65 m), but adds a lot of noise.below i added my config also

Why does range drop while moving?
Is this due to velocity resolution, or motion-related SNR degradation?
What config parameters (e.g., CFAR, threshold) should I tune to fix this?

Thanks,
Sandeep

  • Hi,

Based on our experiments, with a MIMO processing chain (1TX enabled at a time) such as the OOB running on the AWR1843BOOST antenna, one will not achieve robust detection of vehicles at 70m.

Probably 40-50m is the maximum range.

For longer range detection, one would need to enable more TX channels at the same time.

In the 1843MRR demo, 3TX are enabled at the same time and the detection range is increased to 100-120m. However the field of view will be narrower than with MIMO

    thank you
