AWR1843AOP: AWR1843AOP Radiation Emission Inquiry

Part Number: AWR1843AOP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR6843AOP, AWR6843

Tool/software:

Hello.

We are designing a radar sensor component based on AWR1843AOP,
and during the EMC certification test, we found that the chip generates Radiation Emission 2.4Ghz noise.

We confirmed that there is no effect on other peripheral circuits, and we would like to inquire about how to resolve the noise coming from the chip.

In addition, do you have EMI measurement data for the chip?

  • Hello,

Yes, unfortunately this is a known issue. With AWR1843AoP device we do not have any way to mitigate this because shielding is not possible with the antenna on package design. Attached is the report showing failures in this region.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • 1. What is the root cause of this problem?
    2. Is there room for improvement in the chip to be released in the future?
    3. If there is a physical metal plate between the antenna measuring Radiation Emission and the AOP, can this noise be blocked?
    4. Can it be temporarily blocked by improving the firmware?
    ex) BSS off, DSS off

  • Hello,

The root cause is the device clock tree. There are several clocks which have harmonics at 2.4GHz.

There are no plans to update the silicon and the device does not have the architecture which supports low power modes in firmware.

What is your end application? You could consider AWR6843AoP which does support some additional low power modes that can help with emissions, but this also requires a low duty cycle application for it to be effective.

    Regards,

    Adrian

  • It is not possible to change to AWR6843. The application is a cliff detection sensor for short-range obstacles and fall prevention while driving.

  • This is a situation that absolutely needs to be improved for EMC certification testing.

Please advise on additional debugging measures.
