TUSS4440: driving ultrasonic sensor over cabling

Hi team - We are trying to use the TUSS4440 to drive an ultrasonic sensor over a 1m to 3m cable. We did testing on an EVM with the TUSS4440 and ultrasonic on the same board and it worked fine. Now when trying to drive over the cable, the signal at the ultrasonic sensor device is unusable.

Is the TUSS4440 device able to drive the output over any length of cable? Are there any needed design modifications to accommodate driving an ultrasonic sensor over a cable?

Hi Jacob,

Thank you for posting to the Sensors forum!

The output signal not being good doesn't surprise me given the length of the cable. With a 1-3m cable, there is going to be a lot of capacitance that gets added to the signal which will definitely negatively impact the results. Personally, I have not seen anyone attempt to use a long cable (most was a couple of cm) to transfer the output signal, customers tend to keep this signal local to the system to avoid distorting the signal too much.

Hi Alicia - Is it possible to add a power stage or anything else to the design to enable longer cable lengths? Or do we generally not recommend that approach?
