HDC2010: Some design questions about HDC2010

Part Number: HDC2010
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC3020

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

Here are some questions about HDC2010. please help!

1. Can HDC2010 detect 0% RH? or just suit for 20~80%RH?

2. Any real case or customer use to detect 0%RH?

3. Is there any solution suggest to detect moisture or water leak inside the product that will be placed outdoors?

Thanks.

  • Hi Peter,

Yes HDC2010 can detect 0%RH. The RH accuracy spec has its min/max & typical specs from 20% to 80%, but the full range of the HDC2010 is 0%RH to 100%RH. RH accuracy just may be worse below 20% in this case. 0%RH detection is used a lot in sensing environments where a sealed compartment is kept intentionally dry, so that water leaks will cause a spike in humidity and be capturable.

TI recently released an application note on detecting moisture & water leaks, here is the link: Humidity Sensor-Based Water Ingress Monitoring for Automotive Electronics. This document lists HDC3020 and automotive applications, but its principles can be applied to other humidity sensors and applications.

The analysis in this document applies to closed and semi-open systems (where air exchange is blocked or restricted). So as long as the outdoor installation does not have free air exchange allowing humidity to rise and fall rapidly, then this app note should help a lot.
