IWRL6844EVM: ADC data acquisition in mmWave Studio with DCA1000

Part Number: IWRL6844EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWRL6844EVM

Tool/software:

Dear experts,

I am trying to acquire raw ADC data from the combo IWRL6844EVM + DCA1000 in mmWave Studio 4.3.1.0.

For that, I took carefully all the steps as described in User's Guide for mmWaveStudio 4.3.1, more specifically

1) updated the DCA1000 FPGA binary with the latest one from C:\ti\mmwave_studio_04_03_01_00\mmWaveStudio\PlatformBinaries\DCA1000FPGA\DCA1000_FPGA_RECORD_V2.9_21JUL2022.bit

2) set the switches as shown in Figs. 2-31 and 2-32 in EVM User's Guide: AWRL6844EVM IWRL6844EVM (swru636)

3) sorted out the connections and COM ports

4) configured the Ethernet connection so that 192.168.33.30 pings well

Then I arrive at the connected status in mmWave Studio as shown in the screenshot below without any No. Device Detected...

All the further steps I try in SensorConfig to acquire raw data fail. Could you help me out by resolving this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Tim

  • HI, there:

    Is your DCA1000 powered?

Can you send me the result in output window?

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

it was powered by an external adapter 5V / 3A and the EVM by 5V / 1.5A.

The picture was included to show the switches, I took it with external power OFF and disconnected Ethernet while the EVM with LEDs ON was still connected via USB.

By the way I am still not sure if the setup should be configured for 2 lanes ADC or 4 lanes?

Let me come back with other info in a few weeks after my holiday.

    Thanks!

    Tim

  • Hi, Tim:

Glad you mentioned, the EVM does not need a power supply, it is powered by USB port.

    Best,

    Zigang

  • Hi Zigang,

I reproduced the setup without a power supply for the EVM, please see the output results in the screenshots below.

Apparently there are errors in red starting at 14:50:08. Thanks for helping!

    Best regards,

    Tim

  • Hello,

So it seems you are communicating just fine with the DCA1000 since you are reading the "FPGA Version: 2.9" Line. Can you specify what exact error you get when you try to go through the steps of the 6844 DCA1000 setup?

  • Hi Pedrhom,

I downloaded and installed the radar toolbox next to mmWave Studio, and then followed the steps as described in the link.

The adjusted script C:\ti\radar_toolbox_3_20_00_04\tools\scripts\mmWaveStudio_lua_examples\xWRL6844\common_setup_device.lua gave me a RadarAPI tab as shown below, and again without any No. Devices Detected. The output shows an error in red which needs to be sorted out still.

Then I copied and replaced the per-chirp LUT files tx_en_tx1Only.txt and tx_en.txt from the radar toolbox to mmWave Studio...

Then I launched the script C:\ti\radar_toolbox_3_20_00_04\tools\scripts\mmWaveStudio_lua_examples\xWRL6844\capture_TX1Only_58G_2GHz.lua

and arrived at good looking ADC data. The data looks good because it doesn't feature any discontinuities.

Could you explain the red lines in Output after the setup of the device?

    Thanks!

    Best,

    Tim

number of detected devices is missing...

    red lines in the output

    Good ADC data from capture_TX1Only_58G_2GHz.lua

  • Hello,

I believe this a setup error, do you have multiple versions of MATLAB installed? I would ignore it as the plots look correct, and if the error was truly causing an issue then the post processing graphs would not have shown up at all due to it not being able to determine your MATLAB version.

    Best Regards,

    Pedrhom
