LDC0851: LDC0851 - More Coils Means Longer Detection Distance

Part Number: LDC0851

Tool/software:

Im hoping someone can help confirm or correct my intuition here.
I am using an LDC0851 in an project counting the teeth on a spinning wheel. Because of the enclosure, I need the detection distance to be >6mm.
Instead of using one sense coil and one reference coil, I thought I could use multiple sense/reference coils under multiple teeth of the wheel like what is shown in the application note linked below:
https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snoa930c/snoa930c.pdf?ts=1757251231630

My thought was that doubling the number of coils would be effectively the same as doubling the coil diameter and thus I would get improved sensing distance.
From my testing, this seems not to be true but I am not sure if the theory is bad or if I did something else wrong.

  • Hello Logan,

The range will be a factor of the size of the coil and not the number of turns/inductance.  For circular coils, it is typically about 40% of the diameter of the coil in the LDC0851.  This sensing range can be larger for other LDC devices.  See section 2.4 of the app note you linked above.
