AWRL6844: Question about frequency range of antenna

Part Number: AWRL6844
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR6843AOP, AWR6843,

Tool/software:

Dear TI experts,

My customer prepare to develop in-cabin radar sensor for car.

And they have a question about frequency range of antenna.

They already checked the specification of AWR6843 and AWR6843AOP. These IC's frequency range is 57~64GHz. And these EVM's antennas are designed as 60~64GHz.

Many products that is developed using AWR6843 use antennas which frequency is also 60~64GHz.

But my customer checked the specification of AWRL6844 EVM, its antenna's frequency range is 57~61GHz, even IC's supported range is 57~64GHz itself. (It is same as AWR6843.)

Is there any reason why AWRL6844 EVM have an antenna which have lower frequency than AWR6843 even IC's frequency ranges are the same?

(i.e. for best performance, or avoiding violation of radio law or etc..)

Please check this issue. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi, Chase:

One big difference between AWR6843 vs AWRL6844 is:

    1) AWR6843 can only support 57-61 or 60-64.  These two RF band are using different LO frequency.

    2) AWRL6844 support 57-64 (7GHz bandwidth) using one LO frequency.

FCC regulation for in-cabin allows RF bandwidth from 57.0GHz to 61.56GHz, so it makes sense to design the antenna that works for that band.

    Best,

    Zigang.
