DRV401: Question about Field Probe in the datasheet of DRV401

Part Number: DRV401
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV411

Tool/software:

Dear TI experts,

Now my customer check the specification of DRV401 for their new project.

In the datasheet they found that DRV401 needs "field probe" because DRV401 itself is signal conditioning IC, not sensor.

And here are my questions ;

1. Should I use only "Field probe" component with DRV401? Or is it okay to use other components like hall element IC or TMR(tunnelling magnetoresistance)?

2. If the answer about no.1 is yes, should I use only the component of VAC(VACUUMSCHMELZE) which is mentioned in the first page of datasheet? Or Is it okay to use other companies?

Could you suggest the vendor of "Field Probe" exclude VAC?

3. Is there any patent for the "Field Probe" or any other added components which are used with DRV401? I saw about "Patent Pending" in the diagram in the first page of datasheet.

My customer is worried about the patent so they cannot use any component what they want freely.

Please chech these issues. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hello Chase,

    Here are my answers below.

    1. Should I use only "Field probe" component with DRV401? Or is it okay to use other components like hall element IC or TMR(tunnelling magnetoresistance)?

The signal conditioning is only for a field probe.  The excitation needed for other sensors is different.  If you would like to use a hall the DRV411 is available.

    2. If the answer about no.1 is yes, should I use only the component of VAC(VACUUMSCHMELZE) which is mentioned in the first page of datasheet? Or Is it okay to use other companies?

I have not seen the field probe for sale but VAC could make them but not sure if there is a part number available.  Most design there own with the description in the datasheet on the limitations of the drive capability of the IS1 and IS2 pins.

Could you suggest the vendor of "Field Probe" exclude VAC?

Most have designed their own.  If the customer does not have magnetic experience this could be a large hurdle.

    3. Is there any patent for the "Field Probe" or any other added components which are used with DRV401? I saw about "Patent Pending" in the diagram in the first page of datasheet.

No the internals of the DRV401 are the patent pending but I think is already released.  I will verify this.  The field probe is only a magnetic core with windings around it.

    Regards,

    Javier
